ANNAPOLIS–Gov. Wes Moore announced his bid for reelection on Tuesday morning with a pledge to invest in Maryland and set the state apart from the turmoil in Washington.
“When we are watching the chaos from Washington that the people of this state want to know they have a fighter as governor,” he said, speaking to reporters outside the Maryland State House. “They want to know they have a governor who is focused on things like being able to jumpstart our economy, to keep our streets safe, to focus on public education, to make sure we are bringing fiscal discipline.”
Moore, a Democrat, has long been expected to run for reelection in the fall of 2026. A handful of other candidates have filed to run for the job, according to the Maryland State Board of Elections.
Moore is already in the national public eye due to an escalating feud with President Donald Trump, who is threatening to send the National Guard to Baltimore.
But in Moore’s announcement on Tuesday – in a morning video released online – the governor focused on the work he plans to do in Maryland. He said he is “nowhere near done” with the progress he’s made. Moore promises to improve public schools across the state, invest in law enforcement and focus on growing the state’s economy.

During the news conference, Moore denied rumors about his being a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
Moore has tapped his former campaign manager, Lester Davis, to take on the role of chief of staff by the end of 2025, his campaign confirmed on Tuesday.
