Mayors of Annapolis, Frederick, Cambridge, and Ocean City joined Comptroller Peter Franchot in endorsing the Reform on Tap Act of 2018. The legislation would remove limits on beer production, taproom sales, and would allow local jurisdictions to set their own hours of operation. The proposal is the result of a task force created by the Comptroller.

It’s not every day that you can celebrate a century of birthdays. But that’s what happened recently for Vivian Millie Bailey, a retired teacher and former Second Lieutenant during World War II. Bailey says while things have improved for African Americans since her time in the service there’s still room for improvement.
State House Democrats and educators want gambling revenue to fund public school system
State House democratic leaders and the Maryland State Education Association say more money is needed to meet the needs of the state’s public school system. They’re asking the General Assembly to support a constitutional amendment that would require all of the state’s proceeds from gambling to go to funding public education.
Protesters rally at the March on DC for a Better Tomorrow
They called it the “People’s March On Washington” and the weekend before President Donald Trump delivers his first State of the Union address thousands gathered in the nation’s capital and called for a better tomorrow. The march, organized by the grassroots organization, “People Demand Action,” kicked off at the Lincoln Memorial and followed a path down the National Mall that included a stop in front of the White House. Organizers say this is just the beginning of their efforts to mobilize in advance of the 2018 elections.

Prince George’s County files lawsuit against opioid drug makers
Prince George’s County is the latest to file suit against the makers of prescription opioids. County Executive Rushern Baker says the county has seen a dramatic hike in opioid and fentanyl overdose deaths with paramedics running twice as many overdose calls as they have in previous years.
Maryland Dental Action Coalition promotes dental care improvements for Maryland adults
A legislative briefing on Wednesday reviewed the findings the Maryland Dental Action Coalition. The organization told the lawmakers there’s a need for improved access to dental care for adults in the state of Maryland as many are unable to receive treatment only until they are faced with a difficult dental problem. In the 2016 fiscal year, Maryland adults made over 42,000 trips to the emergency room for chronic dental conditions.
Family of woman left outside of Baltimore hospital speaks out
The family of a mentally ill woman who was recently turned away by a Baltimore hospital’s emergency room that sent her into a sub-freezing night wearing only a hospital gown and socks says the treatment was inhumane. The 22-year-old woman is now being treated at another hospital. Video of the woman on the street went viral and it was that video that alerted her family to the problem. An attorney for the family says they’re looking to strengthen state laws to provide more protection to vulnerable patients during a hospital’s discharge process.
Gov. Larry Hogan previews budget plan for the 2019 fiscal year
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan Tuesday previewed his budget plan for FY19. Hogan’s budget includes no new taxes, increases funding for education and protects Marylanders from changes in the federal tax code.
